right i have taken the steering wheel off my friends smart (03plate 700cc pure) and put a boss kit and a momo steering wheel on.
i do know that the passenger air bag will not work but when it was all done the (ABS) and the little (triangle) with the (!) in it stayed on. :silvertri

why would the steering wheel mess the (ABS) up and how do we fix it?????

    Re: steering wheel

There is an angle sensor in the steering wheel cassette which will no longer be there!

This will have knocked out all the ABS, traction control, hill start assist etc.

      Re: steering wheel

ESP/ABS and steering angle sensors now do not work correctly.
The only way to fix it is to put the original wheel back on and then Star machine to clear the faults.
Why did you do it WITHOUT asking first?

Kate you must have typed it out whilst I was trying to type it in English

                  Re: steering wheel

It's my car that we have changed the steering wheel on, basically i knew i was going to lose the airbags that didn't bother me, i didnt realise i was gonna lose the lot. I was hoping you guys of the great intelligence that you all have would have an idea to get round it. I will try anything but at the end of it all i will still be keeping the steering wheel no matter what happens.

                    Re: steering wheel

Basicly the car is only approved for use on the road as long as all the airbags, seatbelt-pretensioners and seatbelt-force limiters... basicly everything to do with safety is switched on. If it's not working due to 'user-intervention' then the car is no longer type approved, it's deemed to be unsafe to use on public roads, your insurance will no longer be valid, and if you get pulled over, you'll probably get done for driving an unsafe vehicle, and having no insurance.

Oh and with the airbag light on (which wont switch off unless you pull out the bulb), it wont pass an MOT.

                      Re: steering wheel

Oh and I've just noticed it's for a fortwo, so unless you have massive tyres on, you need the ABS and ESP to be working otherwise you'll go very very sideways at the first wet roundabout you hit.
